Andrews Coatings Ltd were responsible for developing a coatings system for use in secure areas such as Prison or Police Holding cells for GLMCA (Greater London Magistrates Court Authority), which became HMCS (Her Majesty’s Court Service).

This work was carried out on the instruction of then Head of GLMCA Property, Stuart Banks and under the direction of Babcock Consultants, who were the GLMCA/HMCS Consultants at that time.

A new system was required due to inherent problems with the traditional solutions for coating cell areas, which utilised oil based coatings and were relatively easily defaced and damaged.

The writer was Building Surveyor to the Babcock Consultant GLMCA/HMCS Team and supervised works at many Courts which involved the use of the approved Andrews Coatings system, which was adopted by GLMCA/HMCS after initial trials at two Courts.

The coating system was applied to the ceilings and walls of cells by Andrews Coatings, together with floors being resin coated. The benefits of the system were that the wall coating produced a surface which was extremely difficult to damage, could be easily cleaned if defaced and which utilised components which were not hazardous to health, even if an inmate did manage to flake off areas and swallow them. The accompanying resin floor system had inherent similar benefits.

In addition to installing the approved coating system throughout many London Magistrates Courts, Andrews Coatings were also responsible for laying resin flooring, carrying out suspended ceiling refresh spray treatment and for carrying out graffiti removal work across the Estate.
